Johnny Depp is blind in one eye !

The versatile and rebellious actor Johnny Depp has recently revealed to Rolling Stone that he is blind in his left eye. Depp has been struggling with his vision all his life. He is near sighted in his right eye and has never had proper vision.

He wears glasses when not on set, because without them he can only see a few feet in front of him. Being one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, one would never notice that he is battling to see while he is portraying his more-often-than-not deep, dark or sinister characters.

The fact that he is blind in his one eye may even be one of the reasons the actor adopted Golden Eye, the one-eyed Andalusian horse who played Gunpowder in Sleepy Hollow, thereby saving the horse from a horrible fate.

Battling his challenges with sight seems nothing compared to the "Edward Scissorhands" star’s battle for normalcy. He is quoted as having one desire: “Going somewhere where you don’t have to be on the run or sneak in through the kitchen or the underground labyrinth of the hotel,” he said. “At a certain point, when you get old enough or get a few brain cells back, you realize that, on some level, you lived a life of a fugitive.”

According to scientists, 'night owls' are brighter than early risers and make more money on average than 'morning people'

Research on teenagers suggests that night owls are in fact not lazy, sluggish, or undisciplined; and that they may indeed be brighter than the early risers, who are usually seen in a better light.

The internal clocks of some people make them evening types. They stay up late and sleep in later in the mornings. The morning types go to bed early and are at their peak early in the mornings.

The research conducted at the University of Madrid included tests that measured school performance and individual intelligence. Evening types scored higher on inductive reasoning, which is considered to be a good estimate of general intelligence. Inductive reasoning is also linked to innovative thinking, more prestigious jobs and a tendency to earn higher incomes.

The study found that night owls’ school achievement was rated lower than morning larks’ by about 8 per cent. Researchers believe that this suggests that night owls are disadvantaged by early morning school schedules.

Professor Jim Horn of Loughborough University says that evening types tend to be more social and more people-orientated. He suggests they will probably be good at cryptic crosswords, whereas the morning types will probably rather attempt the logical ones.

Famous larks: George W Bush (reportedly always in bed by 10), Napoleon, Condoleezza Rice (always awake by 4:30), and Ernest Hemmingway, to name but a few. Some of the famous night owls include President Obama, Charles Darwin, Keith Richards and Marcel Proust.

Han Solo was supposed to die in Return of the Jedi, but he was saved by toys! Yes, toys.

Everyone knows that Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises in history, but few are aware that the story is much different than it was initially planned to be.

A New Hope was intended to be a standalone movie, but the studios insisted on at least one sequel.

Intending for it to be “bittersweet and poignant”, Return of the Jedi was supposed to be much darker. Han Solo, one of the film's most popular and enduring characters, was supposed to die halfway through the movie, which would end with Luke Skywalker walking off alone “like Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns”, according to former Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz.

To get a little more specific, there were 60 different types of fungi found in toenail clippings, 40 types in between toes, and 80 different types on the heel.

One woman gave birth to 69 children (not at one time of course) which is the current record. She lived in Russia and 67 of the children lived beyond infancy. It’s said there were 7 sets of triplets, twins at a whopping 16 pairs and 4 of her pregnancies yielded quadruplets. Now if this is true, it’s absolutely amazing! This one was corrected from the original posting at which we had a much lower number of children but thanks to an intelligent visitor to the site which informed us of the cold hard facts and asked if we could change it, after some research it’s now 69 children. Unfortunately the visitor didn’t leave a return email for us to personally thank them.

When I did take a moment to think about it, I realized, wow! that’s deep and I need some time on that one because I really enjoy so many. After more thought, I don’t believe I really have a favorite fact to single out.

“Hi, I have studies just 2-3 topics on your site, and it was neatly presented. “ Elephants haven’t got four knees. They have two. The “knees” at the front are elbows. Fact! “

I’m sorry but fact 48 is not true. There are no animals (not even the elephant) that have four knees.
The joints of the front legs, that are perceived as ‘knees’, are in fact wrists. This is a common misunderstanding due to the belief that a leg joint that bends between the foot and the body must be a knee. The main difference between us and the elephants is that our foot bones and hand bones are separate, whereas those of the elephant are one in the same, and have evolved to suit this four-legged mammal.

Got this email from someone in Snohomish County Washington. It was pasted here just as it was sent to us….

☆ Email Subject:  This website is not a reliable one

” As I was browsing this website I found a few things that made me question strongly its reliability. The first thing was that on one of the facts, it said, “Did you know that your brain has no pain receptors or pain fibers and the brain it’s self can not feel?”. The part of this that jumped at me was the huge grammar mistake. It instead should have said, “… the brain itself can not feel?”. The word ‘it’s’ is a compound of ‘it’ and ‘is’. Even without the apostrophe, though, it would have still been grammatically incorrect. The second thing was you had a ‘fact’ that stated, “The color of a hen’s earlobe will usually determine the color of the egg shell. Farmers know hens with red or darker colored earlobes are most likely to lay brown eggs and hens with lighter colored or white earlobes will usually lay white eggs.” This is incorrect in many ways. For one, hen’s do not even have earlobes! If you were referring to the comb on top of their heads then that is alarming because if a hen has a white comb that does not effect the color of her eggs but it does show that she could be very sick. Secondly, the color of a hen’s egg is determined by the amount of calcium in her diet. The more calcium she is getting, the browner the shells of the eggs she produces. (A browner the egg shell also means the thicker the egg shell.) After that incredibly untrue fact, I was not sure I could trust any more of the so-called facts on this website. If you want your website to have a better reputation, please assure that everything you put on it is actually true. Thank you. “

Okay, Now back to more interesting facts from you.

[Interesting Facts] Thomas Edison “Thomas Edison was a telagraph operator and the inventor of the quadraplex telegraph. Using a telegraph reqires morse code which is a series of dots and dashes, hence his children’s names, or rather nicknames.”

Sounds alike but different words In Funny Interesting Facts #47 the word they’re should be their.

Hi, in the “interesting facts” section of this site there is a fact that says all the clocks in Pulp Fiction are set to 4:20. However, in the coffee scene there is a clock in the background that is set to 8:20.

You should have some facts about men too. Not just women because men are just as interesting. Kbye.

Reading through your ‘funny facts’ I came across ‘fact’#60. The rule of thumb phrase comes from the English law which in the past said that a man could not beat his wife with something that was wider than a thumb. This is completely untrue as such a law has never existed! The origin of this phrase is actually unknow though most likely comes from using the thumb as a rough measuring guide.

Your facts are very intresting, and im truly 1 out of 50,000 woop xoxoxox.

I found this website really interesting! However, I found some of it confusing to read due to the grammatical errors. “It’s” is a contraction of “It is”. If you wouldn’t say the words “it is”, then it’s just its. Also, their means beloning to them. “It’s their wedding.” There means a placement of something. “It’s over there.” And they’re is a contraction of they are. “They’re going to the zoo.” Please don’t take offense to my corrections; I just think it would be easier for people to understand if it was grammatically correct. Loved the facts!

Lobsters have blue blood. A stegosaurus was said to have a brain the size of a walnut. There are 1,792 steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Your ears never stop growing. Women blink almost twice as much as men. I hope these helped.

Gallium and Cesium are two metals that will melt if you keep them on your palm.

An interesting fact: I don’t know if this fact is on the list as I did not get a chance to read all the way through the list; nevertheless this fact has always amazed me: There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on earth.

I thought that I would help you out and illustrate a grammatical error in one of your facts. On #7, your use of the word “worst” is incorrect. The tense of bad that should be used in the instance in worse. I just thought it would make your site seem more reliable if the grammar was correct, since the whole basis of your site is to convey and spread knowledge.

Hi, I really enjoyed reading the interesting facts. But I actually noticed one mistake. In point 76 you say the elephant has the longest pregnancy term, but it’s actually the frilled shark(chlamydoselachus anguineus) with a pregnancy term of 42 months.

If the brain can’t feel pain, what is brain freeze?

I have read your interesting facts about women and i have to say it is interesting but there is a problem. As the subject refers to it concerns the word women and it’s plural. In your list facts the word woman is often mistaken for it’s plural word women and used blatantly as if nothing is wrong with it. I find that disturbing. Please fix it. Regards.

Interesting Facts about The Queen

At birth her father Albert Fredrick Arthur George was 31 years old and he was King George V second son. In 1920 her father Albert was honored with the noble title Duke of York. Being the 2nd son of King George V he wasn’t expected to ever become king and young Elizabeth wasn’t second in line to the throne at birth but 3rd in line after her uncle and her father so she was certainly never expected to become queen.

Just a few months before Elizabeth’s 11th birthday her grandfather King George V passed away and the oldest son Edward (who was Elizabeth’s uncle) by right of birth for being the first son of King George the 5th ascended the throne as king Edward VIII.

To tell you how even more remarkable it is that young Elizabeth became queen, at her fathers birth he was 4th in line to ever have a chance at becoming king. As destiny would have it the cards just seemed to fall into place.

When uncle Edward became king Edward VIII this made young Elizabeth 2nd in line to the throne only after her father. Edward had been having an affair with a prominent married American lady named Wallis Warfield Simpson which his father King George V strongly apposed. King George also knew this wasn’t Edward’s first affair with a married woman.

At the time of the affair Mrs. Simpson was in her 2nd marriage and in the midst of her second divorce. Even knowing it would have been strongly against his deceased fathers wishes and that it would have harsh consequences, King Edward VIII fell more in love with Wallis Simpson. Just months after becoming king he proposed to her.

Not only the people, but the church of England and prime ministers were all very resistant to the idea of such a woman being their queen and just as resistant to the idea of their king (which was also head of the church) being in such conflict with the church’s beliefs so Simpson was deemed an unsuitable bride.

After days of speculation in the newspaper, on December 10th 1936 on a television appearance King Edward the 8th renounced his accession to the throne (retired as king) so he could marry Simpson and during his abdication speech he was quoted as saying ” I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help of the woman I love ”  He was resigned the following day of December 11th 1936 at which time his brother (Elizabeth’s father) Albert became king George the sixth.

King George VI remained king until his death on February 6th 1952 in which he was said to have died peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with a lung problem. Shock and grief took hold throughout the developed world in respect for the kings death. Not only were all types of sports events, theaters, cinemas, regularly scheduled programs and the house of commons ceased but in the United States, president Harry Truman paid tribute to the king and a vote quickly took effect throughout the U.S government even closing the United States senate and house of representatives.

The death of Elizabeth’s father King George VI immediately made her Queen Elizabeth II, she was 25 years old, not in London on the day of his death and a thunderstorm delayed her flight until the next day at which time she took the royal oath and sealed her accession to the throne.

Fact-1: You can’t read while dreaming, or tell the time

If you are unsure whether you are dreaming or not, try reading something. The vast majority of people are incapable of reading in their dreams. The same goes for clocks: each time you look at a clock it will tell a different time and the hands on the clock won’t appear to be moving as reported by lucid dreamers.

Fact-2: Lucid dreaming

There is a whole subculture of people practicing what is called lucid or conscious dreaming. Using various techniques, these people have supposedly learned to assume control of their dreams and do amazing things like flying, passing through walls, and traveling to different dimensions or even back in time.

Fact-3: Inventions inspired by dreams

Dreams are responsible for many of the greatest inventions of mankind. A few examples include:

The idea for Google -Larry Page

Alternating current generator -Tesla
DNA’s double helix spiral form -James Watson
The sewing machine -Elias Howe
Periodic table -Dimitri Mendeleyev
…and many, many more.

Fact-4: Premonition dreams

There are some astounding cases where people actually dreamt about things which happened to them later, in the exact same ways they dreamed about. You could say they got a glimpse of the future, or it might have just been coincidence. The fact remains that this is some seriously interesting and bizarre phenomena. Some of the most famous premonition dreams include:

Abraham Lincoln dreamt of His Assassination

Many of the victims of 9/11 had dreams warning them about the catastrophe
Mark Twain’s dream of his brother’s demise
19 verified precognitive dreams about the Titanic catastrophe

Fact-5: Sleep paralysis

Hell is real and it is called sleep paralysis. It’s the stuff of true nightmares. I’ve been a sleep paralysis sufferer as a kid and I can attest to how truly horrible it is. Two characteristics of sleep paralysis are the inability to move (hence paralysis) and a sense of an extremely evil presence in the room with you. It doesn’t feel like a dream, but 100% real. Studies show that during an attack, sleep paralysis sufferers show an overwhelming amygdala activity. The amygdala is responsible for the “fight or flight” instinct and the emotions of fear, terror and anxiety. Enough said!

Fact-6: REM sleep disorder

In the state of REM (rapid-eye-movement) stage of your sleep your body is normally paralyzed. In rare cases, however, people act out their dreams. These have resulted in broken arms, legs, broken furniture, and in at least one reported case, a house burnt down.

Fact-7: Sexual dreams

The very scientifically-named “nocturnal penile tumescence” is a very well documented phenomena. In laymen’s term it simply means that you get a stiffy while you sleep. Actually, studies indicate that men get up to 20 erections per dream.

Fact-8: Unbelievable Sleepwalkers

Sleepwalking is a very rare and potentially dangerous sleep disorder. It is an extreme form of REM sleep disorder, and these people don’t just act out their dreams, but go on real adventures at night.

Lee Hadwin is a nurse by profession, but in his dreams he is an artist. Literally. He “sleepdraws” gorgeous portraits, of which he has no recollection afterwards. Strange sleepwalking “adventures” include:

A woman having sex with strangers while sleepwalking

A man who drove 22 miles and killed his cousin while sleepwalking (how is this even possible?)
A sleepwalker who walked out of the window from the third floor, and barely survived

Fact-9: Dream drug

There are actually people who like dreaming and dreams so much that they never want to wake up. They want to continue on dreaming even during the day, so they take an illegal and extremely potent hallucinogenic drug called Dimethyltryptamine. It is actually only an isolated and synthetic form of the chemical our brains produce naturally during dreaming.

Fact-10: Dream-catcher

The dream-catcher is one of the most well-known Native American symbols. It is a loose web or webs woven around a hoop and decorated with sacred objects meant to protect against nightmares.

Fact-11: Increased brain activity

You would associate sleeping with peace and quiet, but actually our brains are more active during sleep than during the day.

Fact-12: Creativity and dreams

As we mentioned before, dreams are responsible for inventions, great artworks and are generally just incredibly interesting. They are also “recharging” our creativity. In rare cases of REM disorder, people actually don’t dream at all. These people suffer from significantly decreased creativity and perform badly at tasks requiring creative problem solving.

Fact-13: Pets dream too

Our animal companions dream as well. Watch a dog or a cat sleep and you can see that they are moving their paws and making noises like they were chasing something. Go get ‘em Buddy!

Fact-14: You always dream—you just don’t remember it

Many people claim that they don’t dream at all, but that’s not true: we all dream, but up to 60% of people don’t remember their dreams at all.

Fact-15: Blind people dream too

Blind people who were not born blind see images in their dreams but people who were born blind don’t see anything at all. They still dream, and their dreams are just as intense and interesting, but they involve the other senses beside sight.

Fact-16: In our dreams we only see faces that we already know

It is proven that in dreams we can only see faces that we have seen in real life before. So beware: that scary-looking old lady next to you on the bus might as well be in your next nightmare.

Fact-17: Dreams tend to be negative

Surprisingly, dreams are more often negative than positive. The three most widely reported emotions felt during dreaming are anger, sadness and fear.

Fact-18: Multiple dreams per night

You can have up to seven different dreams per night depending on how many REM cycles you have. We only dream during the REM period of sleep, and the average person dreams one to two hours every night.

Fact-19: Gender differences

Interestingly, 70% of all the characters in a man’s dream are other men, but women’s dream contain an equal amount of women and men. Also men’s dreams contain a lot more aggression. Both women and men dream about sexual themes equally often.

Fact-20: Not everyone dreams in color

As much as 12% of people only dream in black and white.

This Chinese man has saved more than 144 lives—and he's not a doctor!

Chen Si is a Chinese good samaritan who has stopped more than 144 people from jumping off of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge in Nanjing, China.

Since 2003, Chen Si has spent every weekend on the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, a notorious spot from which to commit suicide. Si patrols the bridge on foot and on his motorbike, looking for people who might be contemplating suicide.

To Si, these are people "who look depressed, those whose psychological pressure is great" and whose "way of walking is very passive with no spirit, or no direction." He then approaches them and tries to talk to them. Occasionally they are already over the railing, and he has to grab them and pull them back over.

If we had more people like Si, the world would be a much better place.

When asked why he chose the @ sign, he said the @ sign just made sense.
  • Thomas Edison nicknamed his first two sons Dot and Dash and maybe it had something to do with the unexplained tattoo of dots on his left forearm. I read that his tattoo of dots were shaped like the 5 dots or pips seen on dice. This is not an unusual tattoo to see on people who’ve been in prison and gang members. It can have various meanings, his reason for the tattoo is unexplained.
  • Some of you are wondering who is Thomas Edison? He’s probably best known to many as the inventor of the light bulb, known then as electric lamps. What he actually did was took the already invented electric lamp and made improvements for a more durable, practical, commercial grade bulb. He then filed an improvement claim and sold the bulbs through Edison Electric Light Company.

Interesting Facts About Stonehenge

Stonehenge is found in the centre of a huge complex of monuments and near a few hundred burial mounds which date back to sometime between the Bronze and Neolithic ages.

Here are a few interesting facts about Stonehenge which might make you want to visit this great monument.

  • How old is Stonehenge? Radiocarbon dating measured it to an age of about 5,100 years old with construction beginning in 3100 B.C, 300 years before the Egyptians are thought to have built the first pyramids.
  • The Olympic torch was ran almost 8,000 miles in 2012. The torch is an Olympic symbol. On July 12, 2012 at sunrise during the torches 2012 route, Gold Medalist ex-olympian Michael Johnson (one of the worlds greatest athletes ever) ran the torch around Stonehenge before passing it off to another athlete. Michael Johnson told reporters “it was amazing, It was a great experience to carry the torch around the iconic Stonehenge” Stonehenge can be found to the SW of London at about 137 km from it.
  • It isn’t documented as a known archaeological fact right now who exactly the builders of Stonehenge are. Whoever erected it is suspected to have had a highly sophisticated level of mathematics such as geometry as well as a deep knowledge of astrology. Some of the theories which are discussed include Aliens, the Windmill Hill People, druids and the Greeks. Until recently, the closest known associates to stonehenge were believed to be the druids which were priests of the ancient Britons but carbon dating suggests stonehenge was completed around 1500 years before the druids were in the region. Today it’s thought that the first people to have most likely started work on stonehenge were the Neolithic Agrarians also known as the Windmill Hill People.
  • In 1986, Stonehenge became a World Heritage Site of UNESCO which is protected as an ancient monument. English Heritage are the ones which manage it and the rights of ownership of the monument is held by the British Crown.
  • Stonehenge is considered by many archeologists and astrologists as a flawless design from a geometrical and mathematical point of view. It’s design was extremely precise in it’s day, marking the alignment of the moon and the sun as well as certain weather periods.
  • The stones used in the construction vary from a couple of tons on up to over 40 tons. They were brought from distances which varied between a couple of miles and two hundred and forty miles away.
  • In total, over 900 stone rings can be found in the British Isles. Stonehenge is the most known and the most impressive but it’s not the only one.
  • It’s likely that thousands of people would have been needed to work on the construction of Stonehenge over the years and that it would have taken over a million man hours of labor to complete.
  • Check back soon for more interesting facts about stonehenge.
  • I saw the facts about Stonehenge and thought I would share this one: I am from Washington State and we have the only full size replica of Stonehenge in the world. It is located in Maryhill, WA in Klickitat County, and was built in 1929 by a business man named Sam Hill as a memorial to those who died in WWI. It was the first monument built in the US to honor those who died in WWI. Sam Hill was also responsible for building the Peace Arch which is located on the Interstate 5 US/Canada border and symbolizes the peaceful, open border relation between the two countries.

Answer some of our questions:

  1. How do you think the bluestones were transported from Wales to their current position
  2. What do you think was the purpose of the monument? (Religious or practical)
  3. How have the theories about the monument´s origin changed over the years?
  4. Do you think the location of the monument has a relevance?
  5. How do you think the monument was built?
  6. Do you think that similar Scandinavian stone monuments (such as “Ale´s Stones”) have any connection to Stonehenge?

Interesting Facts about The Great Depression

The United States president in rule when the Great depression started was Herbert Hoover, a Republican. In 1930 he declared that the economy would soon fix itself, because the worst had passed. That was only the beginning though, and the depression would last for another nine years.

A lot of people lost their houses during the Great Depression. These people ended up in shanty towns, which were also called Hoovervilles after the name of the president. Other terms named after the president at that time were Hoover wagons (cars which used mules to pull them because they were broken), Hoover hogs (food which consisted of jack rabbits), Hoover blankets (people used newspapers as blankets) and Hoover stew (the food which was available at soup kitchens).

One of the most well known people of that period, Al Capone, tried to improve his public figure by opening a soup kitchen. A lot of people survived only because of the food offered by soup kitchens all over the country.

Some of the causes are thought to be the stock market crash of 1929, banking system which was weak, the overproduction, the credit bubble, the policies of the government and the fact that the boost of the 1920’s didn’t help industrial workers and farmers.

A lot of people committed suicide after the crash in the financial district of New York. It apparently became so bad that one hotel’s clerks were asking the guests if they wanted to rent a room for jumping or for sleeping.

• Coalition For the Homeless reported in March 2013 that one of every 100 New York city children are now staying in homeless shelters and that the number of homeless people overall staying in New York city homeless shelters has surpassed 50,000 per night and these numbers do not include the number of people displaced by hurricane Sandy. As of March 2013 we have more children, adults and families in New York city homeless shelters than any time since the great depression. 50,000 people homeless every night in one city of the United States is a scary fact.

• The height of the great depression is thought to have peaked between 1932-1933.

• At the height of the great depression the unemployment rate was documented at more than 20% and family income averaged half what they were making in 1929.

• By 1940 the unemployment rate was still just above 15% but between 1941-1942 dropped to just above 1% employment.

• During the peak of the depression, the stock market was down 75%.

• By mid 1932 an estimated 10,000 banks have closed since 1929.

• In 1930 there was an estimated 6,000 street vendors in New York trying to sell apples for 5¢ each.

• In 1933 for U.S  citizens in the United States under a newly implemented executive order, executive order 6102 stated that U.S citizens could no longer own more than 5 troy ounces or $100 worth of gold. Gold at the time was worth about $20 per ounce and the U.S government told everyone they would buy their gold from them for $20.67. If you were tried and convicted of owning more than the the allowed maximum you could be fined $10,000.00 and or up to ten years in prison. Some citizens were exempt from executive order 6102 if their profession required the use of more than the maximum amount of gold allowed.

• During the great depression, soup or stew was nicknamed Hoover stew and the slum towns were often called Hoovervilles and were often just makeshift shacks made of cardboard. Both of course named after Herbert Hoover.

• Hoover Dam, Known then as Boulder dam was built between 1931-1936 during the great depression with putting people back to work in mind and eventually with much debate named after Herbert Hoover.

• World war 2 began in 1939 which created millions of much needed full time jobs putting tens of millions of people back to work and putting the United States back on top as an industrial power. Unemployment would drop to all time lows by 1944 to a low 1.2% with only 670,000 unemployed documented.

Interesting Facts about Solar Energy

Solar energy is the main source of clean energy for all of earths life forms.

Although a small amount of pollution can be created when solar panels are manufactured, transported and installed, it’s nothing compared to the larger amounts of pollution created in processing and using fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

Do Solar Panels Need Maintenance?

Once solar panels are installed maintenance is generally very low and usually only consists of inspecting and cleaning off any debris or objects that block the panel from collecting solar energy from the sun.

What’s the Life expectancy of Solar Panels?

Most outdoor solar panels used today are going to be weatherproof, are expected to endure a wide variety of weather conditions and will have a life expectancy of between 20-40 years. As a rule of thumb the manufacturer may warranty the solar panel from 3 to 25 years. As with other products, the warranties, power output and life expectancy can vary greatly so do your homework.

Do Solar Panels Create Pollution?

Once the solar panel is setup and working, the panel it’s self no longer creates any type of pollution which helps us to see how any pollution made in the manufacturing and transportation process is dismal compared to other sources of energy which continue to create pollution throughout the energy creating process.

If your using solar energy panels to create electric then you’re taking an important step in helping the environment.

Photovoltaic Solar Panel Price

The cost for of photovoltaic solar panels have dropped approximately 80% over the past 5 years. In the 3rd quarter of 2012 the cost for residential photovoltaic solar panel installation averaged $5.21 per watt and the cost for commercial solar panel installation averaged $4.18 per watt. We’ve seen prices offered as low as $2.50 per watt for residential rooftop solar panel installation.

Be sure to check the most recent solar incentive programs and federal tax credits.

In some areas, any excess energy produced can be transferred to a grid and purchased from you by the local energy company. As of the first quarter of 2013 we saw a price of 7.5 cents per kilowatt offered by TXU Energy of Texas.

Below are some interesting facts about solar energy:

  • Solar energy can be used in many ways, from cooking food to heating or cooling houses, powering automobiles, aircraft and providing energy to buildings.
  • With the use of micro inverters you can track the power output of each solar panel.
  • One megawatt of energy can power 1000 average U.S homes for about one hour.
  • In July 2012 the first ever intercontinental round trip of a solar powered plane completed it’s 4,000 mile project to raise public awareness that solar energy can be a reliable source of energy.
  • In July 2012 the United States Bureau of Land Management announced that 285,000 acres across 6 of the nations states were prime areas for solar energy development and plans to move forward.
  • The largest solar plant in the world can be found in the Mojave desert and can create approximately 354 megawatts and it covers a total of about 1,000 acres, with 9 solar thermal plants.
  • Solar energy can only be produced during daylight to make electricity. That energy has to be used during the night but the production stops when the sun goes down.
  • Solar panels which are also known as photovoltaic panels are made mostly from silicon.
  • Researchers are working on a solar window film that could eventually be used on the windows of homes to reduce energy costs. Researchers say it could possibly even be sprayed on one day.
  • Even though you have to invest more initially to buy the solar panels, with  solar panel costs dropping, you should now be able to save money.
  • Robots that install solar panels around the clock and in all types of weather are current being developed and tested.
  • Solar power history dates back to at least 700 BC, when the sun rays were used to create fire, with the help of magnifying glasses.
  • Passive solar designs were used for the first time by Romans and Greeks. Their buildings were facing south, so the sun could light and heat the indoor areas.
  • The year when the first solar panels were released was 1956. Two years later space programs began using them and they remained an important source of energy ever since. One example is the International Space Station, which uses solar energy.
  • We’re working to grow the interesting facts about solar energy page so be sure to remember to come back.

In order to land safely, a pilot had to shoot his own fuel tank!

LCol. A.J. D’Amariotook his plane to Korea in 1952. Immediately after takeoff, he felt that something was not right with his plane.

Afraid it might fall off and rupture during landing, potentially melting asphalt on the runway, the tower wouldn’t let him land with a full tank.

He was not able to get rid of the tank by moving switches and not even manually, so he decided to shoot his tank in order to create holes that would help his fuel go out. Luckily, he did not set up his tank on fire and was able to land safely.
